The Portuguese national football team has moved up one place in the FIFA rankings to eighth place, replacing Italy, which has dropped to ninth place, in a list still topped by Argentina, the organization announced this Thursday.
Six straight wins in Euro 2024 qualifying (1-0 in Slovakia and 9-0 against Luxembourg this September) saw Portugal move up one place, the only change in the top 10, with France in second place. , with third-placed Brazil completing the podium behind Argentina, the reigning world champions.
In this ranking, Portugal is actually the sixth best European team, ahead of historical teams such as Italy, Spain and Germany, who occupy an incredible 15th place.
Among teams led by Portuguese coaches, Rui Vitoria’s Egypt dropped to 35th place, Jose Peseiro’s Nigeria also dropped to 40th place and Carlos Queiroz’s Qatar dropped to 61st place.
Hélio Sousa’s Bahrain retained 86th place, while Paulo Duarte’s Togo remained outside the top 100 despite a slight rise to 119th place.
Among the Portuguese-speaking countries excluding Brazil, Cape Verde remains the best position, ranking 71st, but it is Guinea-Bissau that has made one of the biggest gains, rising six places to 106th.
