The President of the Republic will meet this Friday with the Portuguese emigrant community in New Jersey, on the fifth and last day of his visit to the United States of America to attend the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa will be with Portuguese and Portuguese expatriates in two cities in the North American state of New Jersey, Elizabeth and Newark, and then travel back to Portugal this evening, arriving Saturday morning.
The head of state has already met with the Portuguese community in Newark in 2016 and 2021, when he decorated the centenary Português Sports Club.
This Friday, the President of the Republic’s program also includes a visit to a café in Manhattan, New York, by an American businessman of Portuguese origin who sells pasta de nata.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa arrived in the United States on Sunday evening to take part in the annual general debate between the heads of state and government of the 193 member countries of the United Nations (UN).
In a speech on Tuesday, he called on world leaders to move from promises to action to reform the UN, particularly its Security Council, and global financial institutions, and said Ukraine’s fight against Russian incursion was inseparable from respect for the United Nations. Charter
This week, the head of state met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, spoke at summits on sustainable development and climate change, as well as in open debates in the UN Security Council on Ukraine.
The President of the Republic traveled to the United States of America from Canada, where he made a five-day official visit dedicated to the Portuguese communities in that country, spending a total of ten days outside Portugal.
On Thursday, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa met with the Portuguese immigrant community from New York State in Tarrytown.
In New York, the President of the Republic and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, João Gomes Cravinho, held bilateral meetings to, among other things, promote Portugal’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the biennium. 2027-2028
