Spain beat Sweden in first game after Women’s World Cup title and controversy

Spain this Friday defeated Sweden at home (3-2) in the first meeting since winning the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the controversy caused by the kiss of the former federation president Luis Rubiales with Jenny Hermoso.

Spain made just three changes to the eleven from the World Cup final against England, highlighting the absence of Jenny Hermoso, who was at the center of the controversy that led to Rubiales’ departure after he gave a player a non-consensual kiss.

In Gothenburg, in the first round of Group 4 of the Nations League A, Magdalena Eriksson gave the Scandinavians the lead in the 23rd minute, but the Spanish women were ahead of Athena Del Castillo (38) and Eva Navarro (77).

Lina Hurtig (82) nevertheless equalized the score in favor of the Swedes, but Mariona Kaldentey (90+6) from the penalty spot brought victory to the world champions.

Before the meeting, both teams held a sign that read “It’s Over,” recalling the dispute with Rubiales.
