Portugal will be able to catch 2,296 tonnes of cod in 2024 in the 3M zone, next to Canada’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ), a 92% increase from 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food reported this Saturday.
“This increase is very positive for the Portuguese cod fleet, especially since it follows the increase already seen in 2023, when it was possible to increase the share by 52.5%, which contributes to increasing the profitability of this fleet and ensures that this species is so valued . continues to reach our tables through the hands of our fishermen,” Agriculture Minister Maria do Seu Antunes said as quoted in the statement.
The talks took place at the 45th annual meeting of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) at the Mar de Vigo Congress Palace in Spain from Monday to Friday, he stressed.
Nationally, the talks focused on cod stocks in Zone 3M, with the total allowable catch (TAC) set at 11,708 tonnes, the Ministry of Agriculture said.
“The remaining ‘stocks’ that are important for Portugal have maintained the same fishing opportunities,” he stressed.
NAFO is a regional fisheries management organization whose purpose is to manage, on a multilateral basis, high seas fisheries resources in the area adjacent to Canada’s EEZ.
