ELA: “The ECB seeks to cause a recession and increase unemployment to stop the working class”

Mitxel Lakuntza, general secretary of the Abertzale union, does not understand “the silence” in the face of the statements of Christine Lagarde, president of the ECB, and calls on the governments of Sánchez, Urkullu and Chivite to clarify whether they justify “this type of atrocity.”

Mitxel Lakuntzageneral secretary of ELA, has described as “very serious” the words of Christine Lagarde, president of the European Central Bank (ECB) at the meeting of central bank presidents about “the need to raise interest rates to increase unemployment” , and in this way, “reduce the bargaining power of the working class so that wages grow less.”

Statements that for the Secretary General demonstrate that “Lagarde, in addition to making mortgages more expensive, wants to increase unemployment to weaken the bargaining power of the working class.” Lakuntza does not understand “the silence” in the face of these statements, and calls on the governments of Sánchez, Urkullu and Chivite to clarify whether they justify “this type of atrocity.”

This was denounced in the presentation of the Situation Analysis 145 prepared by the Union’s Studies Office, together with Aitor Murgia, member of said Cabinet. The study concludes that the labor reform fails to address the eventuality and inflation is the result of the benefits of large corporations.

The dossier analyzes the current economic situation, both internationally and in the Basque Country, where special emphasis is placed on the high cost of living, the lack of measures to address inflation and the loss of purchasing power, company profits, GDP , or future crises and geopolitical tensions, among other issues.

Murgia has pointed out that the data analyzed shows that the economy is slowing down, and that in the coming months the trend will be negative. So that “Europe is approaching stagflationthat is, stagnation with high inflation.”

Regarding inflation, the member of the Study Cabinet assures that we are once again facing a high price increase. “Food has risen 25% in two years, and although the year-on-year CPI is now at 2.6%, it is rising again, and at the end of the year we will be above 4%.”

However, they denounce that the real causes are not addressed and policies of impoverishment of the working class continue to be applied, such as rate hike. “All the analyzes (from the IMF, the World Bank, the Business Margin Observatories…) indicate that inflation is fundamentally due to a increase in business profits and speculative activity“.

All this while increasing the percentage of people without sufficient income to meet the usual expenses in the BAC. “The 2022 Social Needs Survey indicates that the 22.3% of the population of the CAPV (almost 500,000 people) do not reach the income that is considered necessary to maintain the minimum levels of well-being and comfort expected in our society”.
