Italian Gennaro Gattuso has become the new coach of Marseille, owned by Portuguese striker Vitinha, the French football club announced this Wednesday, replacing Spaniard Marcelino Toral in this position.
“I am very happy and proud to join Marseille, the club and the Vélodrome stadium, where I had the opportunity to play as a player known throughout Europe for his passion and zeal,” Gattuso said, as quoted by the club. .
Gattuso, 45, has already coached Swiss club Sion, Italian teams Palermo, Pisa, Milan and Naples, Greek club OFI Crete and Spanish side Valencia, following a distinguished playing career in Milan and in the Italian national team.
“I look forward to working with the team and meeting the challenges that lie ahead,” he added.
Spanish coach Marcelino Toral left Marseille’s technical team after just seven official games, becoming a victim of pressure from the fans of the French club on the president and management.
“We believe that the events of September 18 do not allow Marcelino and his technical team to perform in good conditions the role for which they were hired. As a result of this unfortunate situation, they will not continue to work at the club. We are disappointed that we will have to face, for unsportsmanlike reasons, the departure of a coach who arrived in Marseille only on June 23,” the French club said at the time.
Marseille are eighth in the French league with nine points from six games, were eliminated in the Champions League qualifying stages and are currently competing in the Europa League.
