“They claimed to be the nephews of former President Saddam”: House technician recalled the arrival of Iraqi brothers in Portugal

Ammar and Yasser Amin arrived in Portugal in 2017 as refugees. The Iraqi brothers received housing and rewards from the Portuguese Council for Refugees (CPR), settling in Paço de Arcos, Oeiras. A technician from the municipality was present in court this Wednesday as a witness at the beginning of the trial of both accused members of the terrorist organization Daesh and recalled that, in their words, they “had property.” “They claimed to be the nephews of the former president [do Iraque] Saddam Hussein,” he said.

The person in charge emphasized the differences between them. “Ammar was aggressive and disrespectful towards women. He even told me that he likes to see what women are made of inside. I felt scared,” the technician recalls. Yasser, the youngest, “was always cooperative.” The first court hearing was marked by the resignation of the defendants’ lawyer. Carreto Ribeiro called the process “an accomplice to the Lajes summit” that launched the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

“Each of the accused will need 25 years for Portugal to please America. These two never had access, for example, to audio recordings of the testimony of those who accuse them in Iraq,” he explained. The lawyer said he had filed four complaints against Portugal in the European courts. The two accused, in turn, were identified.

Ammar Amin has announced that he will begin a hunger strike at the maximum security Monsanto prison where he is being held with his brother, demanding the choice of a lawyer.
