A Coimbra court this Thursday sentenced a 37-year-old man to nine years and six months in prison for the rape and robbery of an elderly woman in the village of Condeixa a Nova in February.
The panel of the Coimbra Court recalled that the defendant admitted most of the facts, with the exception of threatening the victim with a fork, but in the end proved all the crimes of which he was accused.
A 37-year-old man was sentenced to nine years and six months in prison for aggravated rape and robbery, and the defendant was also ordered to pay €10,000 compensation to the victim.
The Coimbra court took into account the “seriousness of the act” and the fact that the man knew the house and the victim, who had several health problems.
The defendant will remain in pre-trial detention until the court’s decision becomes final, said the judge presiding over the panel.
“As for the seriousness of the facts, there is nothing to add. The facts speak for themselves. Take advantage of your time in prison to change your life,” the judge said, addressing the defendant.
According to the indictment, which Lusa had access to, a 37-year-old man, a mason by profession, went to the house of the victim, whom he had known since childhood, early in the morning of February 21, entering through a side window.
In the room, he threatened the victim with a fork so that she would give him all the money he had and raped her.
The State Ministry stressed that the 81-year-old woman suffers from “severe depressive and respiratory illnesses, high blood pressure, diabetes, vision and hearing problems” and has “very poor mobility”, which constitutes a “reduced level of independence, circumstances of the defendant’s knowledge.” .
