From this Friday, the areas of Setúbal, Lisbon and Leiria, as well as the Madeira archipelago, will be under a yellow warning due to hot weather forecast, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
Setúbal, Lisbon and Leiria will be under a warning due to continued high maximum temperatures from 9am this Friday until 6pm Sunday.
The northern and southern coasts of the island of Madeira and Porto Santo have been under a yellow warning since Thursday, which will last until 18:00 Sunday.
The IPMA issues a yellow warning, the least severe on a scale of three, whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.
Maximum temperatures across the continent will rise above 30 degrees Celsius from this Friday to reach 37 degrees, around 5 to 8 degrees above the September average, according to IPMA.
Starting this Friday, the continent’s weather will be affected by “an intense anticyclonic ridge located over Western Europe, associated with the transfer of a mass of hot and dry air originating in North Africa.”
According to IPMA, maximum temperatures are expected to reach between 35 and 37 degrees, especially in the southern region and Tagus Valley.
Minimum temperatures will also rise and some places, especially along the coast of the Algarve region, could experience nights with temperatures equal to or exceeding 20 degrees.
This hot weather is expected to continue until at least Tuesday.
