Former pro-Russian populist prime minister won legislative elections in Slovakia

Former Prime Minister Robert Fico’s populist Social Direction for Democracy (Smer-SSD) party, which opposes aid to Ukraine, won Slovakia’s legislative elections, according to final results released this morning.

According to the Slovak statistical office, after counting the votes of almost six thousand assemblies, Smer-SSR received 23.3%, ahead of the liberal Progressive Slovakia party (17.1%), led by Vice-President of the European Parliament Michal Simecka.

With no single party winning a majority of seats in Slovakia’s parliament, the country’s future may depend on the third-place party with 14.9% of the vote, the Social Democrats Glas-SD (Voice). , a dissident from Smer-SSD, but sharing Simecki’s pro-Ukrainian position.
