A 69-year-old woman died on Tuesday on the Northern railway line after boarding the wrong train at Coimbra B.
The victim, who lives in the Pombal area, went to Coimbra for counseling, accompanied by a friend. On the way home, they boarded a northbound train, although they had intended to travel in the opposite direction.
When they realized their mistake, they left at the Vilela-Fornos stop. While crossing the line and as a train carrying goods approached, the victim tripped and fell.
The friend “was still trying to help her, but the train was approaching quickly,” said Fernando Nogueira, head of the Coimbra Sapadores fire brigade. The woman was caught and died on the spot.
The shocked friend received psychological support from the INEM team. According to Fernando Nogueira, the driver of the train carrying firewood insistently blew his whistle, but was unable to prevent the accident.
