According to the mayor, one of the objectives is to raise money to face the increase in expenses in the summer period, but also to find a solution to the housing problem.
The City Council of Plentzia will apply a 50% IBI surcharge of the homes in which there are no registrations, with the aim of finding a solution to the problem that exists in the coastal municipality. The measure has been approved by EH Bildu and the Isuskiza platform. The PNV has abstained.
In Bizkaia it is not the only town that has decided to apply the maximum allowed surcharge by municipal ordinance, since Lekeitio, Bakio and Sopela have also taken the same path.
In the case of Plentzia, the measure will affect about 1000 homes —almost 40% of the homes in the town. Being a tourist town, the population triples in summer, and according to the mayor Aitor Garagarza That represents an additional expense.
In statements to the ETB1 program “Egun on”, he indicated that one of the objectives is raise money to face the increase in expenses that are generated in the summer period, but also to look for a solution to the housing problem. “The intention is for these empty homes to be rented,” she said.
“This is nothing more than a measure, so it will not solve the entire problem. What is clear is that in summer the population triples, something that generates more expenses. Coastal towns we are abandonedsince the councils do not take us into account when allocating the money,” he explained.
