Bruno Lage’s time at Botafogo has come to an end. In a statement issued early on Wednesday morning, the Brazilian club said the Portuguese coach would not continue to lead the team, stressing that the latest results obtained were “not as expected”.
“Botafogo announces that by decision of John Textor and the football department, Bruno Lage is no longer coach of the first team. “Botafogo” highlights the professionalism, character and determination of Bruno Lage during the period when he defended the black and white jersey and was part of the family. Despite the coaching start, with 10 games without defeat, recent results have not been as expected. The club thanks Bruno and his entire technical team for the services rendered to Glorioso over the past few months and wishes them great success in their future tasks,” can be read at the beginning of the statement published on the official website of Fogao, where the name has already been revealed will temporarily lead the team: “As a family, Botafogo will look for solutions at home at the moment. The club continues with unshakable and resolute confidence in achieving the goal of the season, with the tireless support of a legion of passionate black and white fans. Lucio Flavio and Joel Carli (as assistant coach) take temporary charge of the club. The team from this environment (4) is preparing for Sunday’s match against Fluminense for the Brazilian Championship.”
Bruno Lage was officially announced as Botafogo head coach on July 8 to fill the vacancy left by his compatriot Luis Castro, who had meanwhile moved to Saudi football and taken over the technical command of Al Nasr from Cristiano Ronaldo and Otavio.
When Bruno Lage took the reins of the team, Botafogo dominated the Brasiliana with a 13-point lead over the second-placed team. As a result of the team’s latest results, Fogan now have a seven-point lead over vice-leaders RB Bragantino, a team led by another Portuguese: Pedro Caixinha.
In 16 matches before Botafogo, Bruno Lage had five wins, seven draws and four defeats.
Despite the unfortunate timing, Botafogo currently has the best attack (40 goals scored) and defense (16 goals conceded) in the Brazilian Championship.
