A 50-year-old man is suspected of starting three fires in forest areas of the municipality of Lamego, Viseu district, in August and September, the Judicial Police (PJ) said on Wednesday.
The joint venture statement said that the fires recorded on August 26 and 27 and September 30 engulfed forest areas, mostly overgrown with bushes.
These fires threatened a large forest area with scattered populations of oak and chestnut trees, apiaries, and several buildings of significant value, which were spared damage due to the quick detection and intervention of members of the public and firefighters.
The suspect was apprehended by the prosecutor’s office through the Criminal Investigation Department of Vila Real, with the cooperation of the PNP Lamego.
The man will be brought in for judicial questioning to take coercive measures.
