Fluminense beat Internacional to reach the final of the Copa Libertadores da America

Fluminense beat Internacional 1-2 on Wednesday with two goals in six minutes to reach the Copa Libertadores final, where they are seeking their first title in South America’s premier club competition.

The first match between the two Brazilian teams ended in a 2-2 draw last week at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium, home of Fluminense, where the final will take place on November 4.

Fluminense’s opponent will be known this Thursday after the match in Sao Paulo between Boca Juniors of Argentina and Palmeiras of Brazil, coached by the Portuguese Abel Ferreira. Last week the first match in Buenos Aires ended goalless.

Internacional opened the scoring in the 9th minute of the first half with a header from Gabriel Mercado.

Fluminense maintained pressure in the second half but offered the hosts several counter-attacks that could have ended their final dream had Ecuadorian striker Enner Valencia been more accurate with two strikes.

Rio de Janeiro equalized in the 81st minute with a counterattack that ended with John Kennedy’s strike. Six minutes later, Copa Libertadores top scorer German Cano scored his 12th goal of the tournament.

Fluminense played in the Copa Libertadores final in 2008 but lost on penalties to Liga de Quito team from Ecuador.
