Although there are no reports of bed bug infestations in Portugal yet, tourists are advised to carefully inspect beds and seats on public transport. Upon return to their country of origin, they must have their luggage checked for insects. Used clothing should be washed at very high temperatures.

DECO Proteste explains that problems with insomnia or anxiety may indicate that you have been bitten by a bed bug, but other characteristics to look for include the presence of a slightly swollen area that is red and itchy or irritating.
But identifying the insect responsible for the bite can be difficult because bed bug bites are similar to mosquito or flea bites but appear two or more days later. “The bites typically appear in a line or zigzag pattern, indicating where the bed bug has passed,” explains DECO.
If there are no marks on the body, it is best to look for blood stains on sheets and pillowcases or dark stains of insect excrement.
