The Labor Minister said this Wednesday that family benefits will become automatic from April 2024, meaning parents will no longer need to claim the benefit from Social Security.
“In April 2024, we will begin to implement the automatic family benefit for the first time,” said the Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, at a press conference where she presented the social security budget for next year.
As he explained, this measure “means that parents will no longer have to claim family benefits” since social security data, based on information from the Institute of Registers and Notaries, will overlap with income data declared by the country.
“Social Security will only do an intermediate step, essentially it will tell the family that they are entitled to it. If the family checks the data and confirms that they want to receive the family allowance, the assignment will become automatic,” said Ana Méndez Godinho. , believing that “this is one of the most effective measures in terms of transforming the social security system.”
The minister stressed that this is a budget with the “biggest ever increase in support for families” with 2.3 billion euros in this area, be it “a structural increase in family benefits or an increase in child guarantees” or the extension of free kindergartens.
According to him, in 2024 the family benefit will increase by 22 euros per month “for all children regardless of group, which means an increase of 264 euros per year for all groups.”
