A new fire broke out this evening in the municipality of Calheta on the island of Madeira, forcing the evacuation of a hotel with 120 tourists.
The flames running down the hillside are approaching the houses. The wind makes it difficult to work on site.
According to municipal president Carlos Teles, the fire started in the territory of Lombo da Rocha, in the parish of Prazeres, municipality of Calheta, in a residential area, and “later spread to the surroundings of the Jardim Atlântico hotel.” which was scheduled to be evacuated around 8 p.m.
About 120 hotel guests were taken to the Prazeres gym, Carlos Teles said, adding that they would spend the night there if necessary.
Members of the Calheta Volunteer Firefighters, Santa Cruz Municipal Firefighters, Madeira Volunteer Firefighters, Institute of Forestry and Conservation and the Calheta Chamber are on site, he added.
At about 9:15 p.m., Lusa was contacted by the commander of the Calheta Volunteer Fire Department, who reported that 16 firefighters, supported by six engines, were fighting the fire at the time.
