The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, plans an official visit to Moldova from October 30 to 31, according to a letter sent to parliament on Monday.
In a letter addressed to the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Moldova, Augusto Santos Silva, the head of state asks for parliamentary consent to this trip, stating that this is an official visit at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia. Sandu.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa received Maia Sanda at the Belem Palace in Lisbon on October 3 at the start of his state visit to Portugal.
On this occasion, the President of the Republic declared Portugal’s support for Moldova’s aspirations to join the European Union and announced his intention to visit this country in the near future, “at the end of this month or at the beginning of next.”
The Republic of Moldova, a country bordering Ukraine and Romania, has submitted a formal application to join the European Union in March 2022. This decision was made after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 of that year.
In June 2022, Moldova received the status of a candidate country for the European Union.
The consent of the Assembly of the Republic to the trip of the head of state is a formality established by the Constitution, which establishes that the President of the Republic cannot be absent from the territory of the country without the permission of parliament.
