Alert level in Portugal ‘under assessment’ due to attacks in France and Belgium

The increased alert level in Portugal is currently “under assessment” through dialogue between the internal security system and security forces, the interior minister said on Tuesday.

“This is not considered [o aumento do nível de alerta]”is being assessed at this stage in the dialogue that is being carried out with the security forces and services,” José Luis Carneiro told reporters when asked whether Portugal would improve security after the recent attacks in France and Belgium following the armed conflict between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas.

The minister noted that the Secretary General of the Internal Security System (SSI), Paulo Viseu Pinheiro, “is in coordination with international structures that cooperate with European countries, and also cooperates with security forces and security services.”

The official added that “depending on the ongoing dialogue, measures will be taken that are considered appropriate from a security point of view, but always with a preliminary assessment, with great sense, attention and balance.”

The minister also said that the person who can provide “adequate information” on the matter is the SSI Secretary General, who “serves as the coordinating and liaison role between the security forces and services.”

“There are specific cases of international police operations that have had dialogue and exchanged information, any doubts on the part of any institution, especially MPs, through the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, should raise this issue with the SSI,” the minister said at the end of the speech. inauguration ceremony of the director of the Higher Institute of Police Sciences and Internal Security (ISCPSI), Luis Fariña.

Chega announced on Tuesday that he would request a hearing from the interior minister and intelligence services so they could provide clarification on measures to prevent “attacks like those that occurred in France and Belgium.”

Lusa has asked SSI questions about the security measures taken in Portugal, but has not yet received any response.

The Islamist group Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, firing thousands of rockets and invading armed militants by land, sea and air.

In response, Israel bombed several Hamas infrastructure sites in the Gaza Strip from the air and imposed a complete blockade of the territory, cutting off supplies of water, fuel and electricity.

The attacks have already killed and injured thousands of people in both territories.

Following the attacks, a teacher was stabbed in front of a secondary school in northern France last Friday, leaving three other people injured. The perpetrator of the attack, who is 20 years old, has Chechen-Russian citizenship and is accused of Islamic radicalization, claimed to have committed the crime on behalf of the Islamic State organization.

Two people were shot dead, another was injured and a suspect was killed by police in Brussels on Monday.

After this attack, the alert level in Brussels was raised to maximum.
