Incubator malfunction puts baby at risk

“Newborns are at risk at the San Francisco Xavier Hospital in Lisbon due to lack of equipment” and “100% occupancy” since the start of work at the Santa Maria Hospital. The complaint came from the Democratic Union of Nurses of Portugal (Sindepor), which reported an incident earlier this month in which a transport incubator failed.

“It was necessary to transfer the newborn to the neonatology service. Since there was no transport incubator, he was placed in a regular crib, and nurses recorded apnea and seizures,” he says. “This situation is extremely dangerous for the newborn, who may suffer irreversible harm,” warns Louis Mos from Sindepor.

The hospital confirmed the problem: “The incident with one of the transport incubators was properly reported, immediately resolved and followed up with a preventive action plan.” Sindepor also reports that “two incubators/intensive care tables” with “oxygen leaks” were received from Santa Maria. The hospital says there has been an “initial intervention” and that the “resuscitation tables are now in perfect working order” as are the transport incubators.
