Englishman Michael Oliver will referee Sporting de Braga’s clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday in the third round of the Champions League, while Frenchman Clément Turpin will be in the Benfica-Real Sociedad squad.
Turpin will be assisted by compatriots Nicolas Danos and Erwan Finjean at the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon for matchday three of Group D, with fellow Frenchman Willy Delageau as the video referee (VAR).
This will be the third time that the experienced French referee will be present at Benfica games after two matches against Dynamo Kiev: in the group stage in the 2016/17 season (1:0) and in the playoffs in the 2022/23 season (3 -0), both in Lisbon.
After two rounds of Group D, Benfica are fourth and last, still without points, while Real Sociedad leads with four, equal to Inter Milan and one point more than Salzburg.
In Braga, the Arsenal side host title-record holder Real Madrid in a match with the English refereeing team, with Oliver assisted by Stuart Burt and Daniel Cook, and Stuart Atwell on VAR.
Although Oliver has never refereed a Sporting Braga game, he has been involved in matches involving Portuguese teams on several occasions, most recently as Benfica hosted Inter Milan (0-2) in the quarter-finals of last season’s Champions League . .
Bragense are third in Group C with three points, level with Naples in second and three behind leaders Real Madrid, while Union Berlin are bottom but still without points.
