Among the 15 main countries of origin, the largest increase was recorded in Germany (+1400 people) and the largest decrease in Brazil (-2800).

In 2022, the number of first-time asylum seekers grew by 47%, reaching about 2,000 applicants, but the majority came not from Ukraine, but from Afghanistan.

The second country from which the most asylum seekers in Portugal came was India, only after Ukraine: 200 requests were registered, not counting beneficiaries of temporary protection.

Last year, the number of migrants arriving in OECD countries reached an unprecedented number of more than six million people, not counting Ukrainian refugees.

The figure, presented this Monday in the OECD’s annual migration report, represents an increase of 26% compared to 2021 and 14% compared to 2019, the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic.
