More than 1,300 police officers were attacked between January and August this year, the interior minister said this Wednesday to highlight a proposal that would now criminalize the physical integrity of law enforcement officers.
Thanks to this government proposal, approved last week by the Council of Ministers and now before the Assembly of the Republic, attacks against members of the Public Security Police and the Republican National Guard can now be punished with effective prison sentences.
“We are very demanding in relation to agents, so we intend to instruct the Main Inspectorate of Internal Administration to ensure that the investigation continues [aos polícias] are also well known. But just as we demand the work of the security forces, we must also protect the security forces from the attacks they have suffered and which have intensified since the pandemic,” José Luis Carneiro told reporters.
