The Amorim family of Galp Energia, Corticeira Amorim, tops the list of the richest Portuguese families, Forbes Portugal magazine published on Wednesday.
Mother Fernanda Amorim and daughters Paula, Marta and Louise, with a fortune of 4.800 million euros, top the list of the 50 richest families.
“Collectively, the 50 richest families own assets worth around €40 billion, which is around 16.5% of the national GDP,” says Forbes.
The value of the first 10 families is about 20 billion euros, which is half the value of the entire list.
In second place on the podium is the Soares dos Santos family from Jeronimo Martins with assets of 3.374 million euros. Next comes the Guimarães de Mello family of the José de Mello group with a net worth of €2.652 million.
Nuno, Paulo and Claudia Azevedo from the group Sonae; The Alves Ribeiro family of Alves Ribeiro, Mundicenter and Banco Invest rounded out the top five. According to the magazine “Last year was a year of growth for most economic groups, which managed to surpass the results of 2019.”
To compile the list, Forbes Portugal surveyed the richest families “in the country, measuring their assets through stakes in listed and unlisted companies.”
“In some cases, when it is impossible to assess the specific shares of each member, or in cases of indivisible inheritance, the position of the family as a whole is assessed,” he adds.
