The Premier League confirmed this Thursday that the football match between Wolverhampton and Chelsea will take place on December 24, Christmas Eve, breaking with tradition since 1995.
The last time a game, in this case Leeds United v Manchester United, was played on Christmas Eve was 28 years ago, as supporters’ associations objected to games being held on that day, citing transport issues.
This time the Premier League ignored the concerns raised by the supporters’ associations and, despite the fact that 24 December was a Sunday and travel was even more difficult, decided to schedule the Wolves v Chelsea match for that day in response to television requests .
The schedule, published this Thursday, also includes the traditional Boxing Day (26 December) with five matches to be played: Newcastle United v Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth v Fulham, Sheffield United Luton, Burnley – Liverpool and Manchester United – Aston Villa. .
Football will be played during the Christmas holidays from 22 December to 2 January 2024, with the exception of 25 and 29 December.
