TV war: find out where to watch the Champions League and other European competitions in the 2024/25 season

The 2024/25 season will mark the start of a new era for the Champions League format, but it will also be a new season in terms of game broadcasting. For the first time, rights will be split between two paid platforms/channels, with SportTV and DAZN taking on this role. This situation will also be extended to the Europa League and Conference League, which will also share rights among themselves, although this situation has some peculiarities.

Especially since SportTV guarantees exclusivity and first choice of the game it intends to broadcast on each day of the Champions League, and DAZN has the exclusive right to broadcast… everything else. This means that from the 2024/25 season, SportTV will have the choice to broadcast the Portuguese teams (of which there could be two) in the Champions League, leaving DAZN to exclusively broadcast all others. As for the other two competitions, in the Europa League, since Portugal can have two teams, SportTV will choose the game it intends to broadcast and DAZN will choose the other. In the Conference League, SportTV will broadcast the game of the participating Portugal team.

Moreover, by always having first and second choice on every matchday of the Champions League, SportTV will theoretically have exclusive rights to broadcast the semi-final and final matches of UEFA’s most important competition. In the other two competitions, the final will also be shown exclusively on SportTV, but the semi-finals will have split games as they are played on the same days – SportTV will then select the match it intends to broadcast.

In addition to the three senior competitions, DAZN announces that it will also guarantee broadcasts for the same period of the Youth League.

Overall, DAZN explained in a statement that it is guaranteeing “multi-platform distribution of the majority of European competition games in Portugal during the 2024/2027 period”, citing a total of 489 games per season, spread across three competitions. 166 of them will be in the Champions League (active and exclusive) and 323 in the Europa League and Conference League (also active and exclusive). SportTV will broadcast 33 exclusive Champions League matches, 17 Europa League matches and 15 Conference League matches.

Only semi-finals (with the Portuguese) and open final.

With this new feature, there will no longer be open matches in the group stages and knockout rounds of major UEFA competitions, with the exception of the semi-finals (if Portuguese teams are involved) and the final. The remaining matches will only be shown on SportTV or DAZN unless there is an agreement between free-to-air broadcasters and platforms with competition broadcast rights for other matches.
