More than 20,000 volunteers of the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC) are launching an annual campaign across the country today, at a time when requests for support for the organization are growing, a source at the institution told Lusa.
As in previous years, the LPCC National Peditoria will be held until Sunday in public places such as commercial areas, churches, cemeteries, as well as on the main streets and avenues of cities across the country.
“The main goal of this collection is to raise funds so that the line can fulfill its mission of supporting cancer patients, among our other goals,” Sofia Cabrita from the LPCC national office told Lusa.
Sofia Cabrita said that the campaign is expected to involve about 22 thousand volunteers, who will be distributed throughout the country and duly identified with red vests and ID cards.
The person in charge emphasized the importance of this fundraiser at a time when the number of requests for support is increasing following the social crisis that the country is experiencing due to inflation, and also because cases of diseases discovered later due to the pandemic during which the “fewer consultations and fewer examinations.”
“The national fundraiser is our important source of fundraising along with IRS appropriations, which is essentially another campaign we run since the League has no other support from the state or other organizations,” Sofia Cabrita said.
In 2022, 20,408 volunteers raised approximately two million euros for the National Paediatrics, resulting in 11,988 consultations and follow-up of 1,810 patients as part of the psycho-oncology consultation program.
According to the LPCC, the amount raised through this initiative also supported 8,931 consultations for the early diagnosis of skin cancer and oral lesions, as well as the follow-up of 4,804 patients in day centers and more than one hundred and a half appointments in LPCC homes.
This year, Cristiano Ronaldo joins the initiative again, calling on the Portuguese to join the cause because “no one can do everything alone.”
Cancer continues to show a high incidence in Portugal in terms of the number of new cases, with approximately 60,000 new diagnoses every year, becoming one of the main causes of morbidity, disability and mortality in the country, with a profound impact on patients. in family and society.
