Nokia sues Amazon and HP for violating video technology licenses

Finnish telecoms conglomerate Nokia announced Tuesday it is suing Amazon in five jurisdictions around the world, including the United States and India, for violating video technology licenses.

The European company added that it had also filed a lawsuit in US court against HP, formerly Hewlett-Packard, also for using its video technology without permission, according to a statement published on the group’s website.

In the text, group licensing manager Arvin Patel said Nokia “has been in talks with Amazon and HP for several years.”

Other jurisdictions where Amazon is suing include Germany, the UK and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

The statement said that it concerns Amazon Prime Video service as well as devices that Nokia believes violate its licenses in several aspects such as content distribution, content recommendations and hardware-related issues.

For Nokia, there is a division between those who have invested in developing the technology “and those who benefit most” from a market that the Finnish company estimates could reach $300 billion by 2028.

Nokia said it has already reached a settlement agreement on these technologies with Apple, Samsung and other device manufacturers.
