Von der Leyen noted Ukraine’s “excellent progress” towards EU membership

The President of the European Commission said this Saturday that Ukraine has made “excellent progress” in the process of joining the European Union (EU) and that this will be included in the report to be presented next week.

“I must say that excellent progress has been made, it is impressive, and we will confirm this next week when the Commission presents its report on the expansion,” Ursula von der Leyen said at a joint press conference with the president. Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky in Kyiv.

Von der Leyen’s sixth visit to the Ukrainian capital is accompanied by a group of journalists, including from the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), which serves as a “pool” for the European news desk, of which Lusa is part.

The report, which will be presented by the European Commission, is crucial for the European Council’s decision in December to begin formal negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the Community bloc.

However, Ursula von der Leyen admitted that Ukraine still has “many steps” to take, namely “reforming the judicial system, tightening ties with oligarchs, fighting money laundering and much more.”

“I sure that [a Ucrânia] you will be able to achieve your goal and move on to the next stage [do processo de adesão]”, concluded the chairman of the commission.

The President of Ukraine warned that the country “is not asking for shortcuts” to accession: “Recommendations [de Bruxelas] necessary to begin negotiations, and we have implemented these recommendations.”

“I am grateful, dear Ursula, for understanding this. Let’s continue our work together and ensure that Russian assets in various parts of the world, but in particular in Europe, cannot be used […]“A terrorist state must, with its assets and assets associated with it, compensate for the costs of war,” Zelensky said.

The Ukrainian president also rejected the fact that the conflict had reached a dead end.

Von der Leyen’s visit is not just a trip to get feedback on Ukraine’s EU accession process.

This Saturday, media attention is focused on rising tensions in the Middle East, and with the United States talking less and less about the war between Kiev and Moscow, the Commission President’s trip aims to send a political signal that the 27 countries Don’t forget Ukraine. and that this conflict remains a priority.
