The Minister of Defense in Bissau will sign a cooperation agreement with the Guinean authorities

National Defense Minister Helena Carreiras formalizes in Bissau on Tuesday a cooperation agreement with the government of Guinea to train the Portuguese-speaking country’s armed forces and police through training, training and equipment maintenance.

Helena Carreiras, who is traveling in the company of the Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Gouveia e Melo, will attend the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries and will hold meetings with her counterpart and the President of the Republic of Guinea. .

The memorandum of understanding for the Portuguese training mission in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau will be formalized by the Guinea-Bissau Ministry of Defense and will cover “several areas of cooperation,” the minister’s office said.

Among the planned activities are “training, training, education and development that contribute to the development of the operational capacity of the national defense and armed forces of Guinea-Bissau.”

The cooperation agreement also aims to “build Guinea-Bissau air police capacity, communications equipment maintenance, maritime surveillance and coastal security, and military health.”

In the company of Admiral Gouveia e Melo, the Minister will visit the project to support the Guinea-Bissau Navy, in which the Portuguese Navy has been providing training to Guinean military personnel since July of this year, having already trained 12 The note is read by members of the Guinea-Bissau Navy who are certified as boat captains.

According to the Portuguese government, as part of the already ongoing cooperation, “operational navigation training activities are currently being carried out on ships.”

The Portuguese Navy also provided the Guinea-Bissau Navy with two high-speed vessels for activities to strengthen maritime security and sovereignty, namely joint inspection activities in waters under the sovereignty or jurisdiction of Guinea-Bissau.

The Portuguese minister’s visit to Guinea-Bissau begins with a ceremony honoring former combatants at the Bissau Municipal Cemetery.
