Unemployment remained at 6.1% in the third quarter, but rose 0.1 point year over year.

The unemployment rate remained at 6.1% in the third quarter, the same level as the previous quarter and 0.1 percentage point above the same period in 2022, the National Institute of Statistics (INE) said on Wednesday.

Between July and September, the unemployed population of 326,100 increased by 0.5% (1,400) from the previous quarter and by 4.4% (13,700) from the same period last year.

The rate of labor underutilization is estimated at 11.3%, representing a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the second to third quarters and stabilization compared to the same quarter last year.

The year-on-year growth of the unemployed population was mainly influenced by the growth of the following population groups: men (9900; 7.1%); people aged 16 to 24 years (13,800; 20.5%) and from 55 to 74 years (13,600; 29.4%); those who completed no more than the 3rd cycle of basic education (10,700; 8.9%); are looking for a new job (7300; 2.7%); and unemployed for less than 12 months (24,800; 13.7%).

Between July and September, 37.0% of the unemployed population had been unemployed for 12 months or more (long-term unemployment), which was 4.9 percentage points lower than in the previous quarter and 5.2 points lower than in the previous quarter. quarter.

The inactive population aged 16 years and over amounted to 3,518,000 people, representing 70.7% of the total inactive population and decreased compared to the previous quarter (17,200; 0.5%) and the same period last year (73,700; 2.0%).

In the third quarter, the employed population was estimated at 5,015,500 and increased by 0.5% (26,800) compared to the previous quarter and by 2.2% (109,200) compared to the same quarter the previous year.

The corresponding employment rate was 57.4%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points compared to the second quarter of 2023 and 1.0 percentage points compared to the third quarter of 2022.

The year-on-year dynamics of the employed population was mainly affected by the growth of the following aggregates: women (58.3 thousand; 2.4%); people aged 25 to 34 years (37,000; 4.0%); with secondary or higher education (97.6 thousand; 6.4%); employed in the service sector (113.7 thousand; 3.2%), hired workers (119.5 thousand; 2.9%), with an open-ended contract (59.2 thousand; 1.7%); and full-time (62,000; 1.4%).

According to INE, the share of the population engaged in remote work was 16.6% (833 thousand people), which is 1.7 percentage points less than in the second quarter of the year.

Among those who reported regularly working from home using a system combining face-to-face work and working from home, the most common combined system was a system combining several days a week at home each week (70.8%; 232,200), which also was the system that recorded the highest quarterly variation (1.6 percentage points higher than in the second quarter of 2023) and year-on-year (4.9 percentage points higher than the third quarter of 2022).

Hybrid employees worked from home an average of three days a week.

Among those who worked from home, 94.9% (833,000) worked remotely, meaning they used information and communications technology (ICT) to carry out their duties from home.

This job scheme covers 16.6% of the total employed population, which is 1.7 percentage points less than in the previous quarter and 0.4 percentage points more than in the same period in 2022.
