The President of the Assembly of the Republic assured this Friday that the parliament will continue to monitor the government until its dissolution, scheduled for January 15, but without biweekly debates with the prime minister or ministers.
Augusto Santos Silva spoke at the end of the leaders’ conference that met today on the consequences for parliamentary work of the decision of the President of the Republic to call early elections for March 10 after the resignation of the Prime Minister.
According to the chairman of the Assembly of the Republic, parliament will be dissolved “around January 15, which means that until that day it will function in full force.”
“We will provide oversight of the government, both when the government is in full operation and when it is in administration, using urgent debates, current topics,” he said.
In contrast, the President of Parliament said it was believed that “there is now little point in holding fortnightly debates with the Prime Minister and ministers” in plenary sessions, while maintaining the possibility of holding European debates.
The leadership conference will meet again next Tuesday to allow the government and parties to discuss issues they consider legislative priorities.
Santos Silva says it was his proposal that received the “consensus of the leaders’ conference” and was not opposed by any parliamentary group or MP.
