The CGTP expects thousands of workers, pensioners and families at a national demonstration this Saturday, taking place in two locations, Porto and Lisbon, to raise wages and pensions amid rising living costs.
As for the inter-union union, the current political crisis following the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa and the call of the President of the Republic Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa for early elections on March 10, which allowed the approval this month of the State Budget for 2024 (OE2024), workers’ need to strengthen the struggle increases.
“Our call is for increased participation, because in this context of calling elections in the name of a state budget that does not respond to the problems of workers or the country, and, regardless of the situation that may arise later, workers need an answer now,” said CGTP director Luse Ana Pires.
According to Ana Pires, in both Porto and Lisbon, “thousands of workers are expected to increase wages and pensions amid rising costs of living.”
The national demonstration is held under the motto “For increasing wages/Against increasing the cost of living” and is aimed at mobilizing “workers and families, pensioners and retirees, youth and other segments of the population to take to the streets for higher wages and pensions, the right to housing, the right on health and social network, protection and strengthening of public services, in demanding a different direction for the country’s development,” the CGTP said in a statement.
In Porto, the demonstration is scheduled to start at 11 a.m., from Plaza de la República to Praça dos Leões, where Thiago Oliveira, member of the CGTP executive committee and coordinator of the União dos Sindicatos do Porto, will speak.
In Lisbon, the demonstration will start at 15:00 and will run from Príncipe Real to Cais do Sodré and will be attended by CGTP Secretary General Isabel Camarinha.
The CGTP requires an overall wage increase of at least 15% and a minimum of €150 per employee.
The national CGTP demonstration, which will take place this Saturday, was announced on October 10, the same day the government presented to Parliament the draft state budget 2024 (OE2024), already generally approved and the process of which is now underway in the specialty, with the final The global vote is scheduled for November 29.
