The 56-year-old woman found dead in a house in the Carvalhido district of Porto late on Saturday was being protected by tele-assistance (panic button) in a domestic violence case involving an ex-partner. This measure would have allowed women to seek help if needed – from psychosocial support to police protection – but this mechanism was not used.
The alarm came from a neighbor on Saturday at 5:40 p.m. PSP was called and on scene agents spoke with the victim’s current partner, who admitted he had not been breathing since 10 a.m. The INEM team pronounced her dead and found signs of rotting on the corpse, indicating that the woman had been dead for a long time. Given the evidence collected, PSP reported the case to the Judicial Police. Inspectors took the victim’s companion for questioning, but later released him.
The Porto Police Service continues to investigate. At stake will be the hypothesis of a crime of failure to provide assistance or even murder.
