The Web Summit, considered one of the largest technology summits, kicks off today in Lisbon with 2,600 startups in attendance, an all-time record, and without leader Paddy Cosgrave for the first time, an event that ends on November 16.
The event, which first took place in the Portuguese capital in 2016, has 2,600 startups participating this year, “the largest number in the history” of the Web Summit, according to the organization, with 900 investors, nearly 2,000 verified media, 300 partners, 800 speakers, only 70 thousand participants, 42% of whom are women.
A total of 160 countries will be represented.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the topics covered at this year’s event, which marked the resignation of co-founder Paddy Cosgrave as executive president of Web Summit following statements he made on social network X (formerly Twitter) about the conflict involving Israel and Hamas.
On October 21, Paddy Cosgrave resigned from his position and was replaced by former Wikimedia Foundation director Catherine Maher.
The eighth web summit will take place in Lisbon a few days after the resignation of Prime Minister António Costa.
After the first two meetings in the Portuguese capital, Web Summit and the government announced a 10-year partnership in 2018 that will keep the summit in Lisbon until 2028.
