UN staff observed a minute of silence in memory of 101 colleagues killed in the Gaza Strip

This Monday, United Nations staff observed a minute’s silence in memory of the 101 staff members killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas.

“This is the highest number of aid workers killed in our organization’s history in such a short period of time. We have gathered here, in this very symbolic place, to pay tribute to our brave colleagues who gave their lives while serving under the UN flag,” said Tatyana Valovaya, UN Director General in Geneva.

The second deadliest conflict for UN staff occurred in Nigeria in 2011 due to a suicide bomber, according to Reuters. 46 people died.

The Gaza Strip has recorded more than 11,000 deaths, as well as thousands injured and displaced by the attacks. In Israel, the latest figures indicate 1,200 dead and more than 200 hostages.
