Students detained during Lisbon college occupation accuse police of violence

Six students detained for refusing to leave the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH) in Lisbon accused police of using violence and insults on Tuesday. PSP does not comment on these allegations.

In a statement, the Lisbon Climate Strike movement said the students “claim to have been the target of violence and abuse by the police.”

Faced with Lusa’s accusations, the PSP’s Lisbon metropolitan command declined to comment.

According to the head of the Press and Public Relations Center of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP, Arthur Seraphim, six students – four girls and two boys – were arrested early Tuesday morning for the crime of insubordination, being released at 6:00 a.m. and appearing in court at 10 a.m.

A total of seven students occupied the FCSH premises at the University of Lisbon on Monday to protest climate change, but one of them was not detained because he left of his own accord when the PSP arrived on the scene.

In a statement, FCS management said it was “forced to contact the competent authorities to ensure the proper closure of institutions,” which usually occurs at 11 p.m., having “exhausted all options for dialogue” with students.
