This Thursday, Livre questioned the Minister of the Interior, José Luis Carneiro, about the detention of student climate activists in two colleges in Lisbon, considering that there was a “disproportion in the means used and the type of force used.”
In a question addressed to the Minister of the Interior, Livre’s sole deputy, Rui Tavares, writes that “the media reported the arrest of three psychology students at the University of Lisbon while they were giving a lecture on climate action.”
“The images show more than a dozen agents in the institutions and the detention of three activists. The action was part of a set of actions in schools to demand an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030 and a transition to 100% renewable and affordable electricity by 2025,” the question reads.
The initiative says that this week “similar events occurred at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH) of the New University of Lisbon.”
“Judging from the images photographed, filmed and provided by the media, there is a clear disproportion in the means used and the type of force used in relation to what was at stake: the peaceful exercise of the right to opinion and demonstration,” states the single MP Ruy Tavares.
In this context, Livret asks the Ministry of the Interior to provide clarification as to “what led to events being considered such a threat that they required such an allocation of resources”, as well as “the measures applied that appear disproportionate and disproportionate.” further demanding to “begin an investigation into the facts.”
A total of nine students were arrested at two colleges this week.
Early on Monday, according to activist and police sources, six students were detained for refusing to leave the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FCSH) in Lisbon, which they had occupied in protest against climate change.
Students accused the police of using violence and insults. The PSP did not comment on these accusations.
On Wednesday, PSP officers detained three student climate activists from the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Lisbon at their educational institution.
According to a statement from the student climate strike in Lisbon, young people gave a lecture on combating climate change that was attended by several dozen college students. Two were detained for giving a lecture, and another was simply watching.
