Woman sentenced to prison for spanking stepson twice

The Coimbra Court of Appeal sentenced a woman who twice attacked her stepson, hitting him on the arm and leg, to one and a half years in prison, suspended for two years. The victim, who is 11 years old, lives with her mother, but in those days was in the care of her father, the husband of the attacker.

The defendant, acquitted in first instance by the Leiria court, acknowledged at trial the “materiality” of the facts, stating that she “acted with the intention of correcting the disrespectful attitude” of her stepson.

The hand slap happened during the pandemic, on a day when the child was home doing homework, “unhappy and slow.” On the initiative of his stepmother, he was filmed sitting at the table and sent to his mother.

A slap on the leg was the culmination of a tantrum during a trip to the dentist. A Coimbra court ruling dated October 25 said that the defendant’s conduct was “manifestly disproportionate and inappropriate for the intended purpose”, considering that it “unacceptably exceeded the power/responsibility of correction/education in the light of the ethical consciousness of society.” Today”.
