PS General Secretary Antonio Costa is in Germany from Monday to Tuesday to take part in celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the party, founded in the town of Bad Münstereifel and whose leadership is ready to leave.
António Costa, who resigned as Prime Minister on the 7th and also announced that he would not re-apply for the position after it was announced that he was the subject of an investigation by the Office of the Public Prosecutor (MP) in the Supreme Court Justice visits Germany in in one of his last appearances as PS General Secretary (elections for his successor will be held on the 15th and 16th of next month) to participate in a commemorative event held jointly with the German socialist party SPD.
Costa heads the delegation, which also includes the deputy general secretary of the Social Democratic Party, João Torres, president of the party’s parliamentary group, Eurico Brillante Díaz, president of the Mario Soares-Maria Barroso Foundation, Isabel Soares and Arons de Carvalho, one of the party’s founders.
On the German side, among others, will be Lars Klingbeil, President of the SPD, and Martin Schulz, President of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation and former President of the European Parliament, as well as President of the local municipality.
The visit will begin this Monday afternoon in Bad Münstereifel with a toast to the founding of the party, which took place on April 19, 1973 at a congress in this place in southwestern Germany, in the former Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). on the outskirts of Bonn, when the majority group of the Portuguese Socialist Party (ASP), led by Mário Soares and composed of political exiles, realized that the time had come to move on to the formal creation of the party.
On Tuesday in Bad Münstereifel, after a series of morning events including the presentation and installation of a plaque marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the PS in a local building, the delegation led by António Costa heads to Bonn. where the Secretary General will speak alongside the leader of the SPD at a panel discussion on “How to defend a democratic Europe” in the framework of the 2024 European elections, as well as during a visit to the Archive of Social Democracy, both at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
Last Saturday, António Costa took part in the National Commission of the PS, which officially approved the holding of direct elections for the position of Secretary General of the party on December 15 and 16, as well as the congress from January 5 to 7, 2024, convened after Costa’s resignation. and setting early legislative elections for March 10.
Three candidates have already been nominated to replace António Costa in the leadership of the PS: the candidacy of former Deputy Secretary General and current Minister of the Interior José Luis Carneiro, a socialist deputy and former Minister of Infrastructure. and housing development by Pedro Nuno Santos and director Daniel Adrian.
