“The 12.9% increase in road crime is alarming, highlighting that drink driving is an intolerable situation that requires strict and swift enforcement of traffic laws.” The statement was made this Sunday by the President of the Republic, who joined the World Day of Remembrance for Road Victims with messages for the authorities and a call for “collective awareness”. Marcelo Rebelo de Souza remembered “with sadness all those who lost their lives prematurely and unexpectedly on the roads, lives that feel like irreparable losses for our country.” And he also lamented “a record of 238 deaths, 1,226 serious injuries and 19,886 minor injuries” in the first six months of this year alone.
Marcelo’s message aims to strengthen oversight, “urgently calling for increased operational work.”
“We owe it to those who left and their families, to those who survived, and to all the professionals who risk their lives to save others.”
