Artists want speed in new rights law

Portuguese authors and artists, through Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores (SPA) and Audiogest, organizations representing the sector, are asking the government to expedite the transfer of the digital single market directive. On Tuesday, an opinion on a proposed law that would allow the transfer to Portuguese law of the new guidelines on copyright and related rights in the Commission for Culture, Communication, Youth and Sports.

Although this is a “purely technical” move, as explained by Miguel Carretas, CEO of Audiogest, the sector is “tired of the delay and hopes that very soon” the project will be submitted to the Assembly of the Republic.

“Authors and artists have waited far too long for legislation that will protect and protect them from the big commercial platforms that generate astronomical profits from their talent and that reward them so little, and urge them not to waste any more time in applying a mechanism that can help mitigate a serious injustice that we have faced,” the Portuguese Society of Authors said in a statement. As for the law, Miguel Carretas recalls that the project has been approved. “The offer deserves our trust. You just don’t notice such a delay,” the official says, recalling that the delay not only harms the copyright holders, but also puts Portugal in a “default” before Europe.
