The Minister of Education is ready to continue working in government positions after the elections

Education Minister João Costa said this Monday that he is ready to continue to hold public office after the elections, despite admitting that it is still early and that these are just speculative scenarios.

I have already dedicated eight years of my life to public affairs, but I am always ready to serve the country, be it in government positions or in academic life,” the minister said when asked about his readiness, taking into account that he expressed support for the candidate Pedro Nuno Santos to become the next Secretary General of the PS.

As for how he would react if he were offered to remain in office, João Costa said it was still “speculation”, stressing that he would prefer the country not to go through the current political crisis, especially since there is a program which needs to be completed. until 2026.

Despite regretting the current political situation, João Costa considered António Costa’s resignation announcement “very worthy”.

The minister, who supports the candidacy of Pedro Nuno Santos for the post of PS secretary general, said that he is “ready to cooperate with him in everything that is necessary”, ensuring that he also has energy that “can be put to good use, be it in government functions , whether in other roles or in my life as a teacher.”

Regarding the possible inclusion in pre-election programs of teachers’ seniority compensation, the main demand of teachers, the minister said it would have to wait, even though he sees in Pedro Nuno Santos “a candidate who is deeply concerned and committed to the quality of education.” public services and issues related to wages.”

“We will wait for the presentation of the strategic proposals to see what the two candidates have to offer regarding careers in general and teachers in particular. I am an optimist and want to believe that no matter who wins, the work of valorization will continue. public service,” he said.

Regarding the possible victory of candidate José Luis Carneiro in the internal elections of the PS, João Costa was not worried, arguing that “the PS has two excellent candidates.”
