The Cape Verdean Association expresses “concern” to the PALOP Nation over the death of Sarah Tavares.

The Association of Cape Verde (ACV) in Lisbon expressed “deepest regret and sadness” at the death of singer-songwriter Sara Tavares this Sunday at the Hospital da Luz, who at the age of 45 was the victim of a brain tumor.

In a statement posted on Facebook this morning, ACV offered his “heartfelt sympathies and sympathies” to family, friends and fans, highlighting the “sadness and horror” with which PALOP Nation received the news that “no one expected or imagined .

The singer, originally from Cape Verde, made her mark as a teenager in the 1990s on the television talent competition “Chuva de Estrelas”, broadcast by SIC, and has since published several original albums that have built bridges in Portuguese-language music.

“Balancê” (2005) earned him a platinum album and a nomination for the BBC Radio 3 World Music Awards as a new artist, while “Fitxadu” (2017) earned him a Latin Grammy nomination.

Over the past year, Sarah Tavares has released several new topics after five years of silence. The latest song titled ‘Kurtidu’ was released by Sony Music in September last year.

Sara Tavares’ career also includes participation in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994 with the theme “Chamar a Música” by Rosa Lobato de Faria and João Oliveira, with whom she finished in eighth place for Portugal.

The death of Sara Tavares was mourned on social networks by several artists and musicians, as well as the Presidents of the Portuguese Republic and Cape Verde and the Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa.

In a note on the Portuguese Presidency website, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa recalled the singer’s “calling, dedication and determination” and emphasized her “great affinity for African music and musicians.”

Cape Verdean President José Maria Neves said the figure of singer Sara Tavares will continue to be present “like a light illuminating the way” in a message published online.

António Costa “lamented with deep sadness the premature death” of Sara Tavares via the social network X (formerly Twitter), highlighting her “own musical language in which different sonic geographies intersect.”
