Climate activists block the mathematics department of the University of Coimbra

Students from the group “End Coimbra Fossil” blocked the entrances to the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra this Friday morning, demanding an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030.

Five students, using pipes and glue, blocked the main entrance to the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Coimbra (UC) and barricaded the entrance to the back doors of the same building, chosen specifically because it was there in 1969 that Estado Novo, then President of the Academic Association of Coimbra, asked to speak, Dani Martins, one of the movement’s representatives, told the Lusa agency.

Signs left by protesters could also be read on the doors of the main entrance: “End Fossils 2030” and “A Estação Nova Fica!”

Five students who were blocking the entrance to this building at Pole I of the university were eventually removed from the main entrance of the PSP around 10:00 with the support of firefighters and INEM.

According to a source in the press and public relations department of the PSP district command, five people have been identified.

Three protesters were taken to the police station for identification and seizure of materials, and two were taken to the hospital and university center of Coimbra for treatment of injuries caused by the protest itself, namely due to the glue, he explained.

According to Dani Martins, the protest began around 8:00 a.m., with the main goal of demanding an end to the use of fossil fuels by 2030 and making 100% renewable electricity available to everyone by 2025.

The protest also addressed local issues, namely protecting the contents of Estação Nova de Coimbra, which will be closed as part of the Mondego mobility system, and the end of the University of California’s partnership with Banco Santander, which continues to “invest heavily in fossil fuels.” “, he clarified.

“We decided to hold a protest at the Faculty of Mathematics because of its symbolism, since the University of Coimbra has not yet created the conditions for students to have the right to vote,” he stressed.
