“There will be more police on the streets, in places where there are threats and risks to the safety of people,” assured the Minister of the Interior, José Luis Carneiro, this Monday at a ceremony marking the 156th anniversary of the Lisbon Metropolitan Command of the PSP. “The proximity of the work is very important,” he added.
The PSP’s new prevention and visibility plan calls for the “establishment of civilian police stations”, places such as in parish councils where crimes can be reported.
The minister planned to “create this model in Lisbon and Amador” and that these “detachments” would allow “the release of human resources” and the reorganization of the stationary structure. This should include the closure of permanent police stations.
There is no effective date for the new plan yet. “The goal was until the end of the year, but the country was faced with a political situation different from the one that existed,” said José Luis Carneiro.
