In 2022, an increase in poverty levels was recorded in Portugal, with 17.6% of people at risk, reports the National Institute of Statistics (INE). The results are taken from the Living Conditions and Income Survey.
The risk of poverty in 2022 corresponded to the share of residents with a net cash income (per equivalent adult) of less than €7,095 (€591 per month).
The increase in poverty affected all age groups, although it was more pronounced among children under 18 and women.
“In 2022, 22.7% of the population with only basic education were poor, significantly higher than the proportion of 13.5% for the population with secondary or post-secondary education and 5.8% for the population with tertiary education. education,” says the INE website.
As for the risk of poverty of the employed population, 10% was recorded, a decrease of 0.3 percentage points compared to 2021. There was an increase in the unemployed population from 43.4% to 46.5%.
Household income in Portugal in 2022 shows that 2,104 thousand people were at risk of poverty or social exclusion. Consequently, the poverty or social exclusion rate was 20.1%, maintaining the same level as the previous year.
