CDS-PP President Nuno Melo admitted this Monday that the party could join a right-wing electoral coalition in the next legislative elections if it would benefit the country, but said that he would not engage in “begging”. “.
Speaking to reporters at the party’s national headquarters, the centrist leader noted that “the first task of a full-fledged party is to be ready to vote for itself, and not live in anguish about what it can do to others.”
“You will never see me begging or saying that CDS operates in a state of need. I have a lot of trust in the CDS as a party, the people who represent the CDS, wherever they are, and therefore what we can do to others will never be a favor or because we live in anxiety about it, it will happen only if at some point it will be better for Portugal and will interest the CDS, with the confidence that there is no drama in the CDS, if necessary, then we go to the vote alone,” he emphasized.
The centrist leader noted that there has not yet been “any contact” with the PSD, but “whatever needs to happen will happen” and repeated that “there will be an advantage in the pre-election coalition”, since this will allow more votes to be taken away, and also “for strategic clarity” because CDS-PP and PSD had already competed together in national, regional and local elections.
Nuno Melo, however, noted that the CDS-PP “has been ready to go to the polls alone for 49 years” and “does not see any drama in this”, and said that his “intent is to prepare the party to yourself.” “With great confidence” go to the polls and elect deputies.
Regarding the electoral goal for the legislative elections on March 10, the MEP said that it involves re-representation in the Assembly of the Republic, “with the same number of mandates that the Portuguese people want to give” to the CDS.
“If you don’t make it, that’s life, but we’ll get through it,” he said.
This Monday, the CDS-PP brought together several party figures in an initiative called “staff meeting”, including the current president and former leaders Paulo Portas and Manuel Monteiro, former secretary of state and current vice president. , Secretary General Paulo Nuncio, Pedro Morais Soares, Councilor of State António Lobo Xavier or former deputies Cecilia Meireles, Nuno Magalhães, Isabel Galriza Neto, Ana Rita Bessa, Hélder Amaral and João Almeida.
The meeting, which took place at the national headquarters of the CDS-PP in Lisbon, was also attended by Adolfo Mesquita Nunez and Francisco Mendes da Silva, who left the party in 2021.
“Today we have a meeting with more than 40 people, many of them very well known, who are helping the CPC think about what this series should be about, the topics that are not only on the agenda, but that need to be addressed . to do with the CDS strategy, but mainly in this sign of unity of all those who, having great benefit from the CDS, do not stay at home and strive for the CDS to return to parliament,” said Nuno Melo.
The President of CDS-PP stated that he is “grateful for the quantity, quality and relevance of the people” who have come to Largo do Caldas because they “add a lot” and have “great political, strategic thinking and proven experience.” and stressed that this initiative “is not a stage exercise.”
“What SDS is showing here today is something many other parties don’t have to show,” he said, emphasizing that “SDS is showing itself as a party with a lot of quality people, with experience, predictable, a party that is moderate right, with social problems, with values, and all this is a legacy that is more than 48 years old, a party that was not born yesterday, a party that is still sorely missed in Portugal.”
Next Wednesday the initiative will be repeated again, with the participation of former leader Assunção Cristas, former minister Luis Pedro Mota Soares, former parliamentary leader Telmo Correia and others.
Nuno Melo noted that former leaders Francisco Rodrigues dos Santos and Jose Ribeiro e Castro were invited but did not attend for “personal reasons.”
