Wilders changes negotiator after fraud charges

Geert Wilders’ anti-immigration party, which won last week’s elections in the Netherlands, faces its first crisis even before it can form a government, after the negotiator appointed to find partners for a future government coalition was forced to resign due to accused of fraud.

Gom van Strien, a senator from the Freedom Party, was charged over the weekend with participating in a scheme to steal about two million euros of public funds from Utrecht Holdings, a subsidiary of Utrecht University, where he worked. The politician denies any wrongdoing but says the allegations will “distract” from his work as a mediator.

Wilders admitted that “mistakes were made” and promised today to appoint a new mediator, who could be former Labor Minister Ronald Plasterk. Let us remind you that negotiations on the formation of the next government were supposed to begin this Monday.
